Celestial Calendar for August

We’ve hit the super-celestial jackpot for this month, folks! The month of August has been an honorable host to a multitude of celestial events, giving us the Perseid Meteor shower- a wondrous display visible Worldwide. But this August 2017 is delivering some serious performances- here’s a quick breakdown of these heavenly events to mark down on your earthly calendars.

Partial Lunar Eclipse  —August 7

Last night, some lucky viewers were able to watch as the moon skirted through the northern part of Earth’s dark outer shadow, producing a partial lunar eclipse. The entire event took about two hours to unfold, starting at 15:50 UT and lasting til 20:51 UT. About a quarter of the lunar disk appeared to darken at the deepest part of the eclipse, which happened at 18:20 UT. This partial lunar eclipse was really a temptress- with only a taste of the penumbra shading bringing the moon into more of a fuzzy shadow, visible with the naked eye.

While most of Europe and Africa got to see part of the show after sunset, as the moon rises in the east, the best places to observe will be across India and western China, where the eclipse peaks during the late overnight hours. Eastern Asia, Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand will witness the eclipse in the early morning hours of August 8.

Perseid Meteor Shower- August 12

Visible Worldwide, the 2017 Perseid Meteor shower can be viewed on August 12th & 13th. Under the dark, cool summer nights- one might be able to see 50 or more meteors per hour (depending on light pollution). The Perseid Meteor shower is produced by comet Swift-Tuttle, which was discovered in 1862. As it orbits the Sun, this big “dirty snowball” sheds tiny grains of rock and dust. Over time, the particles spread out along the comet’s orbital path. Earth flies through this path every August, sweeping up some of the dust grains. They plunge into our atmosphere at more than 100,000 miles per hour, vaporizing as the streaks of light known as meteors.

The Perseid’s are famous for producing a large number of these bright meteors. The shower runs annually from July 17 to August 24 and it peaks this year on the night of August 12 and the morning of August 13. The thin crescent moon will be no match for the bright Perseids this year so be prepared for a great show. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Perseus, but can appear anywhere in the sky.

With all the light pollution we are surrounded by in this day and age, it’s a shame that fewer and fewer people have actually been able to see the wonders of a pitch black night-sky. Take this time to witness one of nature’s most remarkable night shows- the Perseid meteor shower! You can visit your local park, or any area that is not tainted by artificial lighting. Grab a pair of binoculars, or just look up into the sky, and enjoy the show!MeteorShowerSouthamptonBeach

This visualization below (see link) shows these meteoroid streams orbiting the Sun, some stretching to the outer regions of the solar system. Select the meteor shower in the menu to see the corresponding meteoroid stream in space. Their meteoroid orbits are based on those measured by NASA’s CAMS video camera surveillance network, and were calculated by meteor astronomer Peter Jenniskens of the SETI Institute and NASA Ames Research Center.

The Moon & Venus- August 19

The Sun’s second neighbor- Venus, will be cradled by the waning crescent moon in the pre-dawn skies on August 19th. The Moon and Venus will make a close approach, passing within 2°14′ of each other.  The cosy pair will be too widely separated to fit within the field of view of a telescope but will be visible to the naked eye or through a pair of binoculars. Perfect to take a time-lapse shot or simply soak up the view.

Total Solar Eclipse-August 21

Now the to the main attraction. THE most talked about celestial event of the year will finally kiss the horizons of the U.S. from Oregon to South Carolina. Although there will be several eclipses that will pass over the U.S. in the 21 century, it will be the first total solar eclipse visible from the contiguous United States since 1979! For those who are not within the umbra of the eclipse- can enjoy what’s called a partial eclipse.  That includes viewers in Canada, Central America, and parts of South America. For many of us, the eclipse will be a once-in-a-lifetime event, and you’ll want to plan ahead. If you’re within the path on eclipse day, you may look directly at the sun (with proper filters), and experience a few breaf minutes of totality- when the moon will cover the sun completely. In those fleeting minutes, you’ll see the dramatic changes going on in the sky and in the landscape all around you (including drops in temperature up to 15 degrees). During the totality on August 21st, you’ll be may able to see 4 planets with the naked eye that near the eclipsed sun! In order of brightness, these planets will be Venus, Jupiter, Mars and Mercury. Don’t forget to make sure you order some eclipse glasses and safe, approved solar filters. These are going fast so be prepared! If you can travel to be in line with the path of totality, it’s defiantly worth the trip!

If you can’t make it to any areas of totality, NASA will be hosting an “Eclipse Megacast” on August 21st for about four hours. The show will broadcast on NASA TV, the agency’s own channel, as well as Ustream and YouTube; it will likely be picked up by other TV stations, as well. And expect NASA to have some incredible views of this event: the agency is going to observe the eclipse with numerous satellites.

See the National Geographics map of the eclipse path to find out how much of the sun will be covered where you live. And be sure to check out their guide to the total solar eclipse of 2017!

Jupiter, The Moon & Spica- August 25

On this day, glance toward the southwest soon after local sunset to check out the impressive crescent moon pairing up with Jupiter. The eye-catching conjunction should make for an amazing photo opportunity. Look closely, perhaps with binoculars, and a third celestial object, the blue star Spica, will appear just below the cosmic pair.

Fixed star Spica, Alpha Virginis, is a blue giant star in the ear of wheat of the Maiden, Virgo constellation.

Saturn & the Moon- August 30

Ending the month with a bang, the moon will position itself alongside Saturn in the evening southern sky. Keep an eye out for the two after sunset. As Saturn is spinning more than 869 million miles away, NASA’s Cassini spacecraft will be getting ready to take its death dive into the planet’s thick atmosphere after touring the Saturnian system for more than 13 years. It’s Grand Final Orbits began April 22 and ends Sept. 15. When Cassini is nearest to Saturn during each orbit, the spacecraft’s speed ranges between 75,000 and 78,000 miles per hour (121,000 and 126,000 kilometers per hour), depending on the orbit. Backwards

Sitting back thinking back of how we’ve gone backwards.

Instead of practicing Christ’s love, we’ve got the Westboro Baptists.

More information available, yet- more ignorant captives.

Corrupt inhaling clean air, whilst innocent breath in acid.

More Bowies, Princes & Ali’s lining in caskets.

More vegans and yet,

the world’s breeding a new violence.

More beautiful live music, but all I’m hearing is dead silence.

Arnt, you feeling this hot climate?

Try and explain to our young,

how we killed the Earths Lungs,

the Great Barrier Reef,

The largest organism on Earth dangling, by the skin of our teeth.

Scrolling through the endless spectrum of tragedy on my feed.

I know there is unequivocally more hiding, of unheard frequently beams.

Why not choose, to lift your vibrations to the cosmos above?

Start LIVING with the universe within, practicing LOVE.

Thinking one man was above any, was the true original sin.

Get rid of your SELF and see a family of KIN.

Lets march forward as beings of ONE.

Embracing each other until the Earth one day embraces the sun.

LOVE is the LIGHT.

Introducing LuCreativ

Hello all!

For the past 8 months, I’ve been working on a very important project and I feel it’s time I share it! Recently I launched my new business, LuCreativ – Web Design Studio –

adventure-1846437

In goals of aiding small to medium size businesses & artists with their dreams of having the very best marketing collateral, web design, social-media solutions or App development.

AppDesign2

After collaborating with various start-up companies, including 2 business ventures that I began myself (Bone Zappetit, Inc. & Future Illustrations, LLC), I wanted to share my unique artistic approach within the (cookie cutter) world of web design and branding. LuCreativ was founded with the notion that Web Design, Branding & Social Media should be treated with the same eye and tack as a work of fine art- which it is!

I work with over 140 artists & programmers within our organization who are responsible for taking the proof of concept and turning it into web / mobile developments and business strategies. This enables me to really understand client values and style, as I work with them first hand. There are no “middle men” emailing back and forth within divisions, instead, LuCreativ offers real-time updating on project progress via Slack updates & yours truly.  As an Artist, Chef and Animator myself, my goal with LuCreativ is to inspire and aid my fellow artists, innovators, Green Companies & Like-minded brands.

Sometimes you have the concept right but are unsure how to manifest and formulate an action driven plan. Maybe you don’t even know where to start? Build a website- do it yourself, or hire a pro? Already have a website? Maybe you’re thinking about a Social Media Strategy. Or have a rad idea for a mobile app. It’s my goal to maintain the authenticity of your original concept & idea throughout the process. So everything passes through me first. Every. Design. If you identify as an artist/creator/innovator or anything that requires more of right brain attitude- check out LuCreativ!

Tonight’s Penumbral Eclipse & Comet 45p

Tonight’s the NIGHT!

I want to talk to you about tonight’s Penumbral Eclipse, but first things first.

If you’re asking WTF is Penumbral!? Then let’s walk through it…

Looking up at the sky during the daytime, as the sun shines down on our glorious earth you’ll find that any object that casts a shadow has a fuzzy perimeter. This is called the “Penumbra”. Since the Earth itself is a Sunlit object in space, tonight the sun will cast a shadow of the earth onto the moon. AKA- a Penumbral Lunar Eclipse. (got it?)

It won’t be as striking as the ones we’ve seen before, nor will the moon become red as when it passes through the Earths “Umbra” during a partial or total lunar eclipse.

Lunar_eclipse_optics

So what does all this Umbra-Penumbral jargon mean? Will you see the moon completely enveloped by the Earth’s shadow? No. Will it still look dope AF? YES! Kinda…

This penumbral lunar eclipse is really a temptress- with only a taste of the penumbral shading bringing the moon into more of a fuzzy shadow, that will be visible by the naked eye.

Moving on to the When & Where

All my Eastern, North, Central & South America peeps will have a delightful view of this whisper of an Eclipse. If you’re in the North East, you’re in for a treat as you’ll be able to witness the entire eclipse from start to finish.

Here are some times below depending on your location.

Key Times for the Penumbral Lunar Eclipse on February 10, 2017     (* February 11)
Eclipse event UT EST CST MST PST
Moon enters Penumbra 22:32 5:32 p.m.
Peumbra first visible? 23:14 6:14 p.m. 5:14 p.m.
Mid-eclipse 0:44* 7:44 p.m. 6:44 p.m. 5:44 p.m.
Penumbra last visible? 2:14* 9:14 p.m. 8:14 p.m. 7:14 p.m. 6:14 p.m.
Moon leaves penumbra 2:55* 9:55 p.m. 8:55 p.m. 7:55 p.m. 6:55 p.m.

So what am I looking for again?

Since the outer edge of the Earth’s penumbra is super faint, you won’t see any juicy action until the Moon’s edge has eased halfway in..it’ll take around 90 mins before you get into the mid-eclipse (0:44 UT on Feb. 11th)

During the lunar eclipse on February 10–11, 2017, the Moon skirts just outside Earth’s dark umbra. You can look for deep penumbral shading on the north half of the lunar disk.

What really makes this Penumbral Eclipse a beaut is that it falls on Feb.’s “snow moon” with comet 45p coming to join the party! YEY! Comet 45p orbits within Jupiter’s family of comets, which means that gravitation pull from Jupiter effects 45p’s orbit. A urethral green glow that trails this comet comes from the diatomic carbon that’s in its nucleus (real nerdy facts). But don’t pop the champagne just for 45p, if you don’t have a pair of binoculars or a telescope and the want to stay up until 3am EST then, unfortunately, you won’t be able to witness this celestial event. Comet 45P won’t come this close to Earth again until 2022.

Ok, well maybe pop the champagne anyway!!

Alien Nation

“The Alien-Nation Series was inspired to evoke the feeling/suspension of time in moments of pending uncertainties. Pause in such moments, but fear not. Our perception is like a roller coaster to another dimension and time is the track. We sometimes need to remember that we’re not soldered to its rails. Throw your hands up and enjoy the ride!” – Artist Julie Catona

CES 2016- Meditate & Tech

It’s taken me a few days to get back into a rhythm after attending the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas Nevada. With over 150,000 visitors flooding the hallways trying to get a glimpse into the future, it was an intense & inspirational experience. Not only did I have a chance to help my fiance’ as an exhibitor down in Eureka Park, but I was able to scope out, within 3 full days, a lot of exciting new technologies. Trying out everything from VR sets,4D Exercising machines, to smart tech devices that monitor your body’s H20 levels, there was an overwhelming introduction of technologies that will better human and non-human life. Everything from practical inventions that alert you if your infant stops breathing, to wearable tech devices that extend a quality of life for the aging. The future is about living a healthy life- Mind, Body & Soul!

Here’s an invention that completely blew me away….the NERVANA Headset…

  • NERVANA

The hand-held device from Florida-based NERVANA allows users to plug in a music player into a device and get the pleasurable signals delivered by its headphones.

Unique to any other product on the market, NERVANA lets you physically feel the music. Yes, you heard right….FEEL.MUSIC. I’m not talking about a solid bass drop, NERVANA stimulates nerves to magnify the pleasurable qualities of music. This new way to listen to your favorite song/playlist evokes sensations that stimulate your body to produce dopamine, the feel good chemical. Users simply plug in a music source, put in the NERVANA ear buds, and feel the gentle electrical signal dance to their favorite tunes. The settings can be easily customized with simple buttons and a sensitivity dial.

Which is pretty spot on. I tried on the headset, without any discomfort adjusting the headset’s power to 15. Something most certainly was happening. Right before I got up to give an interview on the experience, I began to feel a euphoria poor over me. Immediately I visualized the possibilities and shared them with the team. Treating depression, drug addictions, anxiety were just a few applications that I saw may have great potential.

“That’s where we’re going”

“NERVANA helps people enjoy themselves and break away from the stressors of daily life,” said Dr. Daniel J. Cartledge, co-founder and co-creator of NERVANA. “Everyone needs a change of pace, and we provide a natural way to transform the way people feel and experience the world.”

For the price tag of only $299, this is an incredible piece of technology. I’m sure we’ll see a lot more coming from NERVANA in the next few months.

Transcend- A Poem by Julie Catona

Good morning all my friends-

whether we’ve met within our circle, virtual or kin.

A good morning if you’re reading this then,

your apart of the percent of class who could move mountains if ask-

yet believing you can’t.

We can agree you have the means to amend-

“but what do you mean there’s a need to transcend?”

My friend, there are mad-men that we must apprehend.

Not just one,

there is an army of them-

a farming of sense-

whose charming defense

has disarmed our senses without the slightest offense.

Delicious Shepherd’s Pie (VEGAN)!!

20150729_131717 - Copy

Comfort Food. We’ve all been there- it’s that guilty pleasure, that feeling of home, that “I’ll work out 2 times tomorrow” food. They call it “Comfort” Food for a reason folks. Let’s face it- there are few sacred moments in this life that can be compared to a hott plate of momma’s cookin’. But time’s have changed and I wont even get into the zillion reasons why comfort food has gotten a bad rep. I’m here to change that! This Vegan Shepherd’s Pie recipe is so good, so comforting, so damn delicious that I’ve been hesitant in even sharing it….Seriously…..

It’s my Go-To whenever I know we’re having guests over (I don’t even tell them it’s Vegan until after- love seeing their faces!) Don’t ask me how many people this recipe can serve, as my fiance’ and I have been known to clear quite a few plates of this pie in just one sitting…

giphy (2)

So let’s get comfortable with what  you’ll need 😉

  • 11×7 Glass baking dish
  • Pastry bag & pipe tip (optional)
  • A BIG appetite;)

Mashed Taters:

First rule: Don’t use the waxy, red potatoes for your mash. They just won’t break down enough nor do they absorb the liquid very well. Stick with Russets and Yukon Golds. Of the two, the Russet will give you the creamiest mash, but many people prefer the flavor and golden color of Yukon Golds.

  • 5 pound bag of Yukon Gold Potatoes OR Russets (I usually leave out around 3-4 potatoes from the bag)
  • Vegan Butter (I use Earth Balance, about 3 tbs., just add to taste)
  • Himalaya Salt- (to taste)
  • Crushed Mixed peppercorns (I love the pink and green)
  • Splash of Almond milk/Cashew Milk

Pie Filling:

  • 1 pound bag of Mixed Medley Frozen Vegetables (365 Brand from Whole Foods)
  • 1 bag of Beyond Beef- Feisty Crumble
  • 1 Can Vegan Chili
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 1 tbs. of vegan Worcester sauce
  • 1/2 Cup Nutritional Yeast
  • 1 heaping tablespoon of Just Mayo
  • 2 tbs. your favorite BBQ Sauce
  • 1 tbs. coconut oil
  • 1 tsp. smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp. cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp. turmeric
  • 1 tsp. Cumin
  • salt & pepper to taste

Directions

  1. Start by putting the potatoes in a pot and fill with enough water to cover. Sprinkle a bit of salt in there to speed up the boiling. Bring to a boil and cook for about 10-15 minutes until the potatoes are fork-tender. Drain the potatoes and mash (blending works too) with the salt, pepper, almond milk and Earth Balance. Taste and add more seasonings or EB if needed. Make sure the potatoes stay firm (especially if you want to use a frosting bag, and pipe the potatoes- very pretty)
  2. While the potatoes are cooking, prepare your filling ingredients and preheat the oven to 400°F.
  3. Heat the coconut oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the onions with a pinch of salt, and cook for 3-4 minutes, until they become glazed and clear.
  4. Add the package of frozen mixed veggies
  5. Add the Beyond Meat crumbles and stir until defrosted and they begin to blend with the veggies. Add the can of chili, Just Mayo, Nutritional yeast, BBQ sauce and the rest of your dry spices. (Because this is a vegan recipe, you can taste as you go!)
  6. Pour the filling mixture into an 11×7 glass baking dish. I love to pipe out my mashed taters in little swirls OR you can use a rubber spatula, dolloping the potatoes over the top of the filling. Carefully spread the potatoes out over the filling, making sure to form a seal all around the edge of the baking dish to prevent the filling from bubbling over. Bake on the middle oven rack for 25 minutes, until the potatoes begin to turn golden brown. Let the pie cool for about 10-15 minutes before serving.
